ARCFISH's Arne Hestnes, Senior VP Technology at Kongsberg Discovery, recently shared with the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership (SBEP) his insights on the role of digital technology in understanding ocean change.

After many years of monitoring the Oslofjord, Norway, through the "Healthy Oslofjord" initiative, Kongsberg Discovery has worked alongside research institutions and other partners to collect marine observations, investigate environmental changes and improve understanding of the pressures affecting the fjord.

Applying marine monitoring expertise to Arctic fisheries

Kongsberg Discovery's involvement in ARCFISH builds on this collaborative approach. Supported by the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership, ARCFISH investigates how climate change affects Arctic marine ecosystems and fisheries, bringing together scientific expertise and technological capabilities to improve access to environmental information.

As a technology partner in ARCFISH, Kongsberg Discovery contributes its experience in marine observation systems and digital solutions, supporting the project's ambition to strengthen the knowledge available for sustainable fisheries management. This collaboration between research and industry is central to meeting ARCFISH's goals of supporting the Blue Economy through digital innovation.

"The scientists will make the good ideas, we will make them viable products, and then the customers will use them to monitor the fjords, to set the good quotas or just to see the effects of the climate."

Technology that makes ocean data work harder

The interview also offers a glimpse into Kongsberg Discovery's wider innovation activities, including an ocean testbed where sensors, data systems and artificial intelligence are explored together.

These technologies have applications ranging from monitoring marine ecosystems to protecting critical underwater infrastructure. Their common purpose is to make better use of ocean information — helping users understand changing conditions and respond more effectively.

For ARCFISH, that ambition is particularly relevant. Better access to marine knowledge can help fisheries stakeholders navigate environmental change while supporting the long-term sustainability of Arctic marine resources.
