ARCFISH featured in Danish environmental magazine Vand & Jord

A new article by ARCFISH researchers from Aarhus University explores how Digital Twins of the Ocean can support more sustainable fisheries management in the Arctic.
The September 2026 issue of the Danish environmental magazine *Vand & Jord* features an article entitled “Digital tvilling af havet i Arktis” (Digital Twin of the Ocean in the Arctic), authored by Vibe Schourup-Kristensen, Marie Maar, and Janus Larsen. The article introduces ARCFISH's approach to developing a Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO) that brings together ocean observations, ecosystem models and fisheries data to improve access to marine information and support evidence-based decision-making.
The article looks at ARCFISH's case study site, Disko Bay, Greenland, where we are exploring how environmental conditions influence the transport and survival of northern shrimp larvae. By combining an individual-based larval model with the three-dimensional FlexSem coastal ecosystem model, we have identified considerable differences in larval transport between years. These variations are closely linked to ocean currents, temperature and sea-ice conditions, providing valuable insights into processes affecting shrimp populations and their potential response to climate change.
We also look at ARCFISH's second case study; Iceland and the northern fishing grounds towards the Barents Sea. Here, we are integrating fisheries data, including information collected aboard fishing vessels and during fish processing, with oceanographic and environmental information. This approach aims to support more efficient fishing operations, improve resource management and potentially reduce fuel consumption and associated emissions.
These applications are executed through the ARCFISH DTO that is built on Kongsberg's Blue Insight platform, and is designed for and with stakeholders across the fisheries sector.
ARCFISH demonstrates the potential of digital solutions to make scientific knowledge more accessible and useful to fisheries stakeholders, marine managers and policymakers, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient Arctic Blue Economy.
